New Bird Owner Looking For Advice?

I am looking into purchasing a bird. Never owned own but always wanted one. I plan on buying a pair to keep each other company. As a newbie to birds would you recommend a parakeet or finch as a starter bird. Which one is quieter and more manageable to maintain. Any advice would really help.New Bird Owner Looking For Advice?
Please ignore the person who says to get only one. That's a tired and stupid old wives tale and it's shameful to see ignorant people still passing that bad advice around.

I have cared for several dozen parrot-type birds over the past 15 years, and I know that avian companionship (other birds) is very important to them. I have never had a bird who got mean or ignored me or didn't like me because they had a bird friend. I currently have three non-breeding pairs of birds. They keep each other company when i'm not around and are glad to see me and spend time with me when i get home.

Two cockatiels or two budgies (sold in pet stores as parakeets) are a great way to get started. Be aware that these are very intelligent animals who need complex diets (not just seeds), plenty of companionship, space, toys and mental stimulation, and that they live for many years if well cared for. Only get them if you are ready to learn to care for them and to make the commitment to care for them. Good luck.New Bird Owner Looking For Advice?
I agree with east bay. We have alot of birds right now, and our sun conure and one green quaker have actually ';bonded'; and share a cage. They are still as friendly as the day I got them. If you raise birds around each other and still interact with them daily, they won't become mean and nasty to people. Finches you won't be able to handle most likley. Parakeets I've always found hard to tame, exspecially for beginners. (unless you find a breeder that has them already hand tame. Some good smaller birds to start with that are eay to tame, handle, and aren't as loud are parrotlets, lineolated parrakeets, meyers parrots, quakers (they are much louder than the others, and they are illegal in some states because they are looked at as an invasive species. But I love these little birds- they have awesome personalities).

Good luck
Finch are more ';look only'; pets. They do best kept in groups and left alone. You provide food, water and custodial services, that's it.

They make the most pleasant sounds. They sort of mutter to themselves. I find it relaxing and soothing.

Parakeets are good pets. They tame down quickly, are small, quiet and don't live to be over a hundered years old. Get one. Pairs will bond to each other and ignore/attack you.

Cockatiels make good pets too. Same as parakeets, but a little smarter.

Parrotlets and ring neck parakeets are good pets too.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE

Read up on their care.

They have specific needs and they can get sick and die if not properly cared for.
well the quiet one out of parakeet and finch can be the finch depending on species probaly easier to maintain....less food and mess ...love birds bite hard!!!!!!!! so do other parrots
They are both fairly quiet birds, but if you want to actually handle them, pairs of finches and parakeets wouldn't be good.

Also, lovebirds are great. They literally are ';Love';Birds, they will stick close to their mate. They are so beautiful.
cockatiels are great too! i wouldn't trade mine for anything. you can interact with them, teach them whistles and sayings.

cockatoos are wonderful too, they're just like babies! however, they require a lot of attention, so if you don't have the time to spend with them, i wouldn't suggest them.

any bird in the parrot family will need attention or something to keep them busy, otherwise they will pull their feathers out, and could ultimately cause their death.

good luck!
