Just got a new dog...Advice on how to train on certain things.?

I just got a 5 month old dachshund from a friend of ours. He's a really great dog, except for a few quirks. He doesn't know how to walk on a leash, and he doesn't know that the outdoors is an optional place to use the bathroom. I tried just kinda putting the leash on him and then telling him to ';come';, but he would just sit there and look at me. He's five months, would it be too late? I wouldn't think so, but I just need some advice on how to get this dog used to a leash.Just got a new dog...Advice on how to train on certain things.?
well about the toilet training you jsut have to take him out constantly and praise him for going outside, keep a close eye on him and if he starts to go inside bring him out ASAP. Never punish him for doing it in the wrong place, but you prob know all that already. For my dog, he wouldnt walk on a leash. he had just never done it before so didnt know what to do. I started lifting him outside, just to the end of the driveway on the leash and he always wanted to run back inside. So i just made him walk slowley while i held the leash. Gradually i built up the distance and then he didnt mind being on a leash anymore. dont let him walk ahead of you, hell think he is the boss. Hold him back and eventually he will get the idea. it might take a while but once he gets confidence he'll be all excited when he sees you reaching for the leash.Just got a new dog...Advice on how to train on certain things.?
keep walking him and make sure you are telling him that he is doing rite if he walks. a lot of puppies dont walk on the leesh but keep walking and you will be fine. however dont walk him loads and loads like 10 times a day cuz he will be very tired and thirsty and to get a dog to you the outside bathroom outside simply paper train it first then wen its paper trained start to train outside.
Take it slow, use a lot of praise and use treats to your advantage. But be careful with how many treats he gets, Dachshunds can have severe back problems from obesity.

I suggest boiling a chicken breast in water and tearing it into little pieces for him. You want to make him think that being on a leash and coming to you are the absolute greatest things in the world. The chicken breast will help a lot.

And obedience classes are a great idea, too.
Crate training is an excellent way to make your puppy safe and secure! I have a 2-year-old miniature Dachshund named Flash. I started Flash out in a wire crate but he would poop in it. When I switched to plastic, he became more comfortable in it. Some toys or a stuffed animal will also make him/her feel more comfortable.
It's never too late.

And now is a great time to start obedience classes.
Use treats for everything he will think that if he does what ever you want he will get a treat. he will learn in no time.
It's not too late. Use treats and be constant. Good luck.
it's never to late to train you dog
