What advice can you give a new teacher?

I am a 2nd year teacher and I realize by reading a lot of these Yahoo Answers that many people have had good and bad experiences with their teachers. What advice can you give someone who wants to be a great teacher. Feel free to share your experiences. What advice can you give a new teacher?

Do not smile your first semester. Seriously.

Establish discipline first, or nothing else you want to do will work.
be fun and cool and have a sense of humor...kids love that. and wear hip clothes. that has an effect too. also talk about stuff they like like video games and idk yahoo answers and stuff. and use slang.
never seperate your classes into groups of ';smart'; and ';not so smart'; you might lose a gem.
ok dont be to strick because then kids will talk about all day and give you attiude and dont be to nice because they will walk all over you (thehehe). if you are a gr. school teacher NEVER i mean NEVER take away gym kids will hate you so much! art is fun and do alot of fun things with them like for valentines day and any other day. dont give ALOT of home work if agian in gr school they hate that. be fun but stricked dont yell alot dont black mail them and have fun!!
If you don't have children of your own (and even if you do), don't EVER poke the ';Mother Lion'; about her cubs. We want to have a working relationship with our child's teacher, however, rude, insensitive, personal and condescending remarks made about a child have a tremendous impact beyond what you see in the classroom. Do not play favorites with your students. Try to recognize that every child has something good inside of them. It may not be grades or sports ability, but there is something there. Seek in out and help it blossom so their school confidence can grow. If at any time, you feel this isn't the right profession for you, please do yourself and any future student a favor and leave. We have had experience with 2 teachers in particular, who were wonderful. They have an obvious love of what they do and actually treat their students with respect and they receive it in return. We have also had poor years with teachers who really should have retired years ago as the look on their face spoke volumes. Everything was an ';irritant'; to them.

A teacher's job is a hard one, but so is a parent's. We will treat you with respect if it is a two way street. Good luck to you....
